February 7, 2024 – Our Nation’s Energy Future Coalition (ONE Future), a coalition of more than 50 natural gas companies taking action to reduce methane emissions, has announced plans to expand on existing efforts in 2024 and beyond.

In 2024, ONE Future will update its industry-leading marginal abatement cost curve study to redefine where opportunity lies to advance cost-effective emissions reductions and abatement, in light of new technology. The coalition will also begin the process of updating its post-2025 segment and value chain targets with more precise, more stringent targets that reflect expected technological advancements.

“We are not resting – we are moving forward,” ONE Future Executive Director Jim Kibler said. “This year, we will launch an ambitious expansion of our efforts. Our member companies are committed to continuous improvement, and we are investing in increasing the confidence of emissions inventories and addressing uncertainty through a process grounded in true science. We have already begun implementing increased and enhanced measurement, as proven technology allows.”

As part of this continuous improvement, the coalition will also evaluate approaches to enhanced measurement, monitoring, reconciliation, and validation (MMRV) of emissions.

ONE Future members have worked closely with regulators and non-governmental organizations since 2014 to prevent and reduce methane emissions through an aggressive, science-based performance methodology. Member companies lead the way in driving down emissions across the natural gas value chain through shared best practices and groundbreaking technologies, including 83 unique methane abatement activities across segments. The results achieved underscore the success of this approach: the coalition has beat its 2025 target in all six years of reporting, with the most recent methane intensity calculated at 0.421%, well below the 1% target for 2025.

ONE Future offers the only platform in the world to provide a protocol for evaluating emissions intensity on a value chain basis and assign a cost-effective target for each operating segment, allowing member companies to benchmark themselves against a cohort of high-achieving operators.

The coalition welcomes companies who are equally committed to the cause of preventing and reducing methane emissions across the natural gas value chain to join.

About ONE Future: ONE Future was formed when seven companies came together in 2014 with a focus to collectively achieve a science-based average rate of methane emissions across our facilities equivalent to one percent or less of total natural gas production. Since our formation, we have grown to more than 50 companies accounting for some of the largest natural gas producers, transmission, and distribution companies in the U.S. ONE Future members operate in 25 out of the 38 production basins and have operations in 48 out of the 50 states. Therefore, ONE Future’s data represent a geographically diverse and material share of the U.S. natural gas supply chain. For more information visit onefuture.us.
