Focus on Safety Extends to Biodiversity Protection and Conservation

ONE Gas believes in a shared responsibility to care for our planet. In addition to infrastructure upgrades to increase safety and reduce emissions, ONE Gas employees participate in conservation and restoration programs that preserve and protect the ecosystems in and around the communities the company serves.

One example is a pollinator garden at one of the company’s service centers in Tulsa, Oklahoma, planted and maintained by employee volunteers. The garden grows more than 50 native plants chosen specifically to provide food, shelter and nesting to multiple pollinators including Monarch butterflies and bees. To promote pollinator growth and sustainability, no pesticides or herbicides are used on the garden.

To minimize waste, employee volunteers repurpose scrap polyethylene pipe materials from service centers and have built 165 artificial reefs to serve as fish habitats in local lakes. This innovative program promotes the biodiversity of lakes in Kansas and Oklahoma. Another creative solution is recycling polyethylene pipe by sending it to a facility where it is pelletized and reused for nonfood grade plastic installations including pallets, containers and other useful products for consumers.

Additionally, ONE Gas partners with conservation organizations to identify habitats of threatened species across its service territory. These species include the once-endangered Lesser Prairie Chicken and the threatened Long-Eared Bat species both native to Kansas and Oklahoma. The company monitors, minimizes or avoids seasonal construction work in these areas as needed to preserve the habitats.
