Shale Mag: Encino Joins ONE Future
Increasing member numbers from 27 to 28, Encino Acquisition Partners recently joined Our Nation’s Energy Future. Known as ONE Future, the coalition is tasked with reducing methane emissions across the natural gas industry.
Having purchased assets from Chesapeake Energy in the Utica Shale, Encino came into possession of 900,000 acres of oil and gas leases. Being such a large acreage holder, ONE Future’s Executive Director, Richard Hyde, is excited about their recent membership.
When asked if he felt if Encino’s large footprint would be a major contribution, Hyde said, “I don’t measure a member’s contribution by size.” He indicated that what each member can contribute on an individual basis to the group itself is all compiled together to accomplish one goal. “It is great to have the addition of Encino.”
ONE Future goals
- Membership Growth: Recruit members to grow the organization’s size and work as a whole to reduce emissions.
- Natural Gas Benefits: Demonstrate to the public ONE Future’s commitment and that the industry can sustain the nation’s energy needs while reducing emissions and increasing production.
- Ensuring natural gas long-term sustainability in a low carbon economy.
ONE Future emissions sectors
According to Hyde, ONE Future’s members each bring something unique to the table, no matter which sector they belong to. Methane emission numbers are extracted from 4 sectors established by the coalition.
- Production: The production sector reduced methane emission intensity by 52% between 2017 and 2018. It comprises approximately 6.6 million net acres in 11 U.S. Basins.
- Gathering and Boosting: The gathering and boosting division lowered methane emission intensity by 70% and increased throughput by 262%. It includes over 25,000 miles of piping.
- Processing: Along with increased throughput by 806%, methane emission intensity decreased by 38% between 2017 and 2018.
- Transmission and Storage: Sector results for the 2017 to 2018 period show 27% decrease in methane emission intensity with a 51% throughput increase. They encompass over 179,000 miles of pipeline in 48 states.
- Distribution: The distribution area saw an 11% methane emission intensity reduction. With 715,000 miles of pipe, a 9% increase in throughput was witnessed.
Encino Acquisition Partners’ contribution
Encino will contribute to ONE Future in the same fashion as other members. As a part of the production sector, they will report their annual reduction results in methane reduction. Additionally, they will occupy a seat in the group’s board of directors.
“Encino has a strong commitment to its stakeholders, employees, landowners and communities to operate safely, responsibly and sustainably,” said Encino President and CEO, Hardy Murchison. “We are proud of our emissions reductions efforts thus far, and membership with ONE Future will help us continue to deliver on this commitment.”
ONE Future: Looking ahead
With membership increasing and including companies like Encino, reduction goals expect to be met. According to yde, ONE Future will be releasing their methane emissions reduction data compiled from 2019. Reporting of that data should publicize by November of 2020.
